The FL-36 provides more 'flash brightness' than the built-in flash on the camera to sufficiently illuminate subjects positioned further away, or for photographing larger groups of people. Indoors with suitable reflective surfaces like neutral coloured walls or ceilings, bounce flash using the tilt and swivel flash head create a larger light source providing a softer and even quality of illumination without the harsh glare of direct flash.

Flash output varies from a maximum of GN 36 (ISO 100) at the telephoto setting of 42mm (equivalent to 84mm for a 35mm film camera), and GN 20 at a wide angle setting of 12mm (equivalent to 24mm).
