High image quality is achieved by the use of two ultra-low dispersion lens elements and a floating lens group to produce high detail images with well-suppressed chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range. The 8-blade circular aperture ensures that out of focus areas exhibit very pleasing bokeh and circular out of focus highlights. This contributes to the high quality of the images produced by the lens.
The lens features a ring-type USM autofocus motor combined with a high-speed Central Processing Unit (CPU) and an optimised AF algorithm to make autofocusing both fast and silent. Because the lens has a ring-type USM, Full-time manual focus is possible allowing you to adjust the focus manually without first having to switch to manual focus.
A minimum focus distance of 1.2m throughout the zoom range allows you to get in close to subjects such as butterflies and flowers to really concentrate the viewer’s attention on the subject.
To improve the handling of the lens the zoom ring is located towards the front of the lens body, while the focus ring is located closer to the camera. The grip on each of the two rings is different so it is easy to tell both by position and feel, which ring adjusts focus and which adjusts zoom. When carrying the lens around or when storing it, the lock switch can be used to stop the lens inadvertently zooming due to gravity. This helps to keep the lens compact when not in use.
